Working at The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust (PAHT) has been a great experience which has allowed me to grow and develop as a pharmacist.
Career progression is prioritised as highlighted by the pharmacy diploma and non-medical prescribing (NMP) course being offered to all band 6 and band 7 pharmacists. Whilst completing the NMP course, I was assigned a few hours a week to do ward rounds and join clinics with the doctors and this really helped with my learning. Teaching and training is also very thorough, owing to the monthly teaching sessions that take place. This has helped to broaden my clinical knowledge, optimise patient care and reduce errors.
To ensure safe practice, new pharmacists that join the trust must shadow an experienced pharmacist and complete logs so that they feel confident before they work independently on the wards and in the dispensary. Weekly pharmacy meetings are organised with the aim of improving the standard of care and offering the opportunity for pharmacists to voice any issues they have. The pharmacy team is very friendly and approachable which fosters a harmonious working environment, which is ideal for any new pharmacist entering the job.
