Work experience

We understand how important work experience opportunities are in supporting people to make decisions about their future career and when applying for jobs and courses.

There are a range of clinical and non-clinical placements available across a range of specialities, areas and departments. Please note that age and health restrictions apply. Further information on current work experience opportunities is available on the Hertfordshire and West Essex Health and Care Academy website.

All applications for work experience must go via our work experience portal.

We aim to meet as many requests for work experience as possible, however placement delivery is dependent on the capacity of each department.

Work experience applications: Timescales

  • Applications for work experience are processed on a first come first served basis, with the exception of our Paediatric placement and Medical Shadowing programme.
  • Please ensure you apply for work experience at least 8 weeks in advance of your preferred placement date. Placement dates are selected as part of your application.
  •   Applications submitted less than 8 weeks in advance will be considered at the discretion of the Trust Learning and Careers Officer.
  • Applications are processed on a monthly basis, in order of the preferred placement date requested. We process and respond to applications within 6- 8 weeks of the desired placement date. For example, if you have applied for a placement in July; your application will generally be processed in April, and you will then be contacted directly (in April/May) if your application is successful.
  • Therefore, whilst applying early is advised; doing so does not mean that your application will be processed more quickly than 6-8 weeks before your placement date.
  • Unsuccessful applicants will be notified within our 6-8-week timescale.

Our work experience programme is not suitable for current Medical School students.

All of our medical university placements/electives are organised through Queen Mary’s university (QMUL) please see below details of how to contact them.

Everyone offered words of such reassurance and kindness. I felt so cared for and the communication with me at all times was fantastic.
