Work on the new Adult Assessment Unit: Road closure on Saturday evening
We are currently carrying out construction work on our new Adult Assessment Unit, which will significantly improve the experience of our patients at The Princess Alexandra Hospital.
The new Adult Assessment Unit will be a two-storey extension adjacent to the emergency department (ED) at the front of the hospital and next to Charnley Ward. It is due to be fully completed at the end of January 2021 (the first floor will be complete at the end of December 2020, with the ground floor following at the end of January). The Adult Assessment Unit will support the health and wellbeing of patients by avoiding unnecessary admission to hospital and ensuring a shorter stay for those who are admitted. Patients who are seen at the unit will benefit from rapid assessment and treatment for a variety of illnesses and injuries. This will improve the facilities available for our patients ahead of the completion of the new hospital.
This week, work is underway to connect the existing bridge to Charnley Ward with the new AAU. The work is due to be completed by Sunday, 20 December. The majority of this work will be completed during normal working hours, and pedestrian walkways will remain available to use.
However, to complete other significant work, the road between the main hospital entrance and energy centre (boiler house) will be closed from 8pm-4am on the evening of Saturday 19 December into Sunday 20 December.
There will be traffic marshals at either end of the road closure to redirect traffic to alternative routes, which are shown in the below photo:
The road closures will not affect access to the emergency department or the main hospital entrance for ambulances.
