Runners set to take on the London Marathon in aid of raising funds for local hospital

Keen runners are set to put their best foot forward and represent The Princess Alexandra Hospital Charity in the 2023 TCS London Marathon.

The charity has two participants who are set to run, jog, or walk their way through the marathon on 23 April 2023.

The important funds raised will support all of the hospital’s patients, people, and visitors. The charity enhances patient care, purchases special equipment, improves facilities, and invests in vital research that supports patients now and into the future.

Mark Sanz, marathon runner, aged 54, from Hoddesdon (pictured, top right), said: “The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust is my local hospital, so I am delighted to be representing their charity at the London Marathon this year.

“I have needed to attend the emergency department myself in the past and have visited family and friends who have also needed to be cared for, that’s why I want to show my token of appreciation to the amazing teams and give back to my local community.

“The London Marathon is a well-supported race and I look forward to passing by some of London’s most icon landmarks and soaking up the atmosphere.”

Lizzie Richards, marathon runner, aged 24, from London (pictured, bottom right), said: “It’s a dream come true to take part in the London Marathon. Whilst cheering on participants taking part in the London Marathon previously, I cried tears of emotion and had goose bumps the whole time, in awe of those running.

“Over the last few months, I have put myself to the test and trained tirelessly in preparation. So far, I have raised £1,000 through babysitting and fundraising activities at local schools.

“I hope to inspire others to support fundraising initiatives for a good cause, and especially helping to build a better future for healthcare.”

John Keddie, non-executive director and chair of The Princess Alexandra Hospital Charity, said: “We are very excited to cheer on our runners as they take part in the London Marathon.

“We are always extremely grateful for any contributions towards our charity, and the London Marathon is an excellent way to help us fundraise and support our patients and our people.

“A heartfelt thank you and well done to Mark and Lizzie who have raised almost £8,000 combined. There is still plenty of time to support them and donate via their Just Giving pages.”

Inpatient comment:

Everyone offered words of such reassurance and kindness. I felt so cared for and the communication with me at all times was fantastic.
