New director of midwifery re-elected as chair of The Royal College of Midwives

The new director of midwifery at PAHT has been re-elected as the chair of The Royal College of Midwives.

Giuseppe Labriola (pictured) joined PAHT on 21 June from his previous role as associate director of nursing and midwifery at Newham Hospital, part of Barts Health NHS Trust.

He has been on the board of The Royal College of Midwives for four years, and he has been the chair for the last two years. He has now been re-elected for another two-year term.

The Royal College of Midwives (RCM) is the national voice of midwifery. They are the only professional organisation and trade union dedicated to serving midwifery and the whole midwifery team.

Giuseppe said: “It is a privilege to have been re-elected to this important role, ensuring that the voice of midwives and those who work with maternity services are represented. I have thoroughly enjoyed working as chair of the RCM.

“During this time, we have been successful in ensuring that maternity support workers are eligible to stand for board members and we have increased diversity on the board. We have also campaigned for better pay and provided evidence to the pay review board, and moved the RCM headquarters to its new home in Borough.

“I am delighted to have now joined PAHT and I am committed to continuing to improve the maternity services we provide. My role as chair of the RCM gives me the opportunity to share the feedback we receive at PAHT to help shape services nationally for the future.”

Sharon McNally, director of nursing, allied health professionals and midwifery, added: “Congratulations to Giuseppe on this fantastic achievement.

“I am pleased to welcome Giuseppe to PAHT, and look forward to working together to enhance the experience of women, babies, their partners and families at PAHT.”

Inpatient comment:

Everyone offered words of such reassurance and kindness. I felt so cared for and the communication with me at all times was fantastic.
