New bowel cancer support group launches in Harlow

To mark Bowel Cancer Awareness Month this April, bowel cancer nurse specialists at The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust (PAHT) are launching a new bowel cancer support group to offer patients a vital space for connection, support, and shared experiences.
The support group, launching on Thursday 24 April, will provide a friendly, informal environment where people can navigate their journey with understanding and empathy. The group will meet regularly at St Thomas Moore Church Hall, Hodings Road, Harlow, CM20 1TN, from 1pm to 3pm.
The group is open to anyone affected by bowel cancer, whether patients, carers, or family members, and aims to create a strong local community of support. Currently, there are no other bowel cancer support groups in the local area, making this new group an important resource for the community.
The support group is part of a broader effort to help patients feel empowered by providing not just medical guidance but emotional and social support as well. The bowel cancer nurse specialists will facilitate discussions and ensure that all attendees have the opportunity to voice their concerns, ask questions, and connect with others in a meaningful way.
Deepamol Cruz, Macmillan colorectal clinical nurse specialist at PAHT (pictured), said: “Bowel cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the UK, and nearly 44,000 people are diagnosed each year. Early detection through screening can make all the difference, with 9 in 10 people surviving bowel cancer when diagnosed early.
“By launching this support group, we hope to empower patients, reduce isolation, and foster a sense of community. It’s crucial that people know they are not alone on their journey, and we are excited to offer this space for shared learning and support.
“We invite everyone affected by bowel cancer to take advantage of this invaluable new service and to join us on 24 April for the launch of the bowel cancer support group in Harlow.”
