The informatics team at The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust (PAHT) has been shortlisted in the 2024 HSJ Digital Awards under the category ‘driving change through data and analytics’.

The HSJ Digital Awards celebrate excellence in digitising, connecting, and transforming health and care; and recognise innovative digital projects that are transforming care delivery, enhancing efficiency, and improving patient outcomes.

This shortlisting recognises the collaborative approach taken to develop data products for outpatients, the emergency department and theatres that uses machine learning to deliver data insights for operational improvement and management. The data insights have made a remarkable impact including:

  • Improving overall theatre utilisation rates from 66% to 73% in a 6-month period between October 2022 and March 2023.
  • Reduced the wait list in ophthalmology by 17.2% for the period 16 June 2023 to 21 August 2023.
  • Freeing ~1 full time equivalent (FTE) worth of time through rationalisation of processes

Zoe Collis, associate director of business intelligence said: “The informatics team at PAHT work hard to ensure that we use data and analytics to help improve performance in teams and processes across the trust.

“I am delighted that they have been recognised for their work to deliver these improvements for our outpatients, emergency department and theatres.”

Phil Holland, chief information officer, said: “These awards celebrate excellence in digitising, connecting, and transforming health and care; and this project does exactly that.

“The project also supports our trust priorities to harness new technology and digital solutions to transform patient care and improve how we work; and I would like to wish the team the very best for the main awards in June.”

The official awards ceremony will be held in Manchester on 6 June. The full list of nominees for the 2024 HSJ Digital Awards can be found at https://digitalawards.hsj.co.uk

Inpatient comment:

Everyone offered words of such reassurance and kindness. I felt so cared for and the communication with me at all times was fantastic.
