Lois Jackson, aged 43, from Waltham Abbey, is preparing to take on the London Marathon on 27 April, in honour of her beloved daughter, Edie.
Edie tragically passed away at the age of seven after a courageous 14-month battle with a brain tumour. Though not an experienced runner, Lois is determined to complete the marathon to raise funds for two organisations that played a vital role in Edie’s care – the Dolphin Ward (children’s ward) at The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust (PAHT) in Harlow and The Haven House Children’s Hospice.
Edie was diagnosed with a Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), an aggressive and inoperable brain tumour, and sadly passed away in 2021. Throughout her journey, she demonstrated remarkable courage and resilience, qualities that now motivate Lois to push through the marathon’s gruelling 26.2 miles and have spurred her on to raise an incredible £4,155 so far.
Lois secured her place in the London Marathon through the ballot, a rare feat considering there were 840,000 applicants for just 17,000 spots. Inspired by her husband, her brother-in-law, and her close friend, who have all tackled marathons before. Lois decided it was time to take on this challenge in Edie’s name and to continue raising awareness for these crucial causes.
Lois said: “In honour of my daughter Edie, I’m taking on the London Marathon – and I’ll be honest, this is going to be my biggest challenge yet. I’m not the best runner, but every step I take is for Edie, who continues to inspire me every single day.”
