The team is committed to providing support, training and education to clinical staff, patients and carers on maintaining and promoting skin integrity and preventing pressure ulcers (also known as bed sores). If during your hospital stay, you have a wound that is failing to heal, or that is of concern to the staff looking after you, you may be referred to the team for specialist advice.
The team can provide specialist advice on all types of wounds, including:
- Pressure ulcers
- Leg ulcers
- Surgical wounds
- Traumatic wounds such as haematomas and skin tears
- Fungating cancer wounds
The role of this team is essential, because the skin is as an organ similar to the heart or lungs. When it becomes damaged, the protective barrier it offers against external threats is compromised, increasing the risk of infections, chronic open wounds, or scarring. Wound care is important to ensure the skin heals effectively after such injuries.
Our goal is to collaborate with patients and carers, assisting them in managing their wounds and minimising the chances of future skin damage.
