Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust (PAHT) is a Paediatric oncology shared care unit (POSCU). The role of the POSCU is to deliver as much care as close to home as possible for children and young people with cancer. The POSCU does this in collaboration with a Principle Treatment Centre (PTC).
Care for children and young people with cancer is planned and co-ordinated by a paediatric cancer centre (called a Principle Treatment Centre or PTC). These centres include Addenbrookes Hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital and University College London Hospital.
Some of the child`s or young person’s care will be undertaken at the PTC. Some care can be provided at Princess Alexandra Hospital POSCU. We provide supportive care as an inpatient on Dolphin ward such as blood transfusions and admissions for febrile neutropenia. We also administer outpatient chemotherapy on Gibberd ward.
We offer 24/7 advice and open access to Dolphin ward when a child is unwell or requires assessment. Oncology nurse specialists are on hand to support children and their families and to help ensure access to the relevant services.
