We provide supplementary support that is beyond the scope of the NHS. With your support, we enhance patient care, purchase special equipment, improve facilities and invest in vital research that supports patients now and into the future.
What we do
With your help, we’re able to fund extra equipment, improve patient environments and support wellbeing initiatives. From creating calm spaces to funding innovative treatments or extra training for staff, everything we do is focused on enhancing care and improving environments. With your support we can continue this.
We work closely with local NHS teams, individuals, communities, clubs, companies and schools to enable this to happen, to make a real difference for patients, their families and the dedicated staff who care for them.
Within the charity, there are just over 60 charitable funds – some support particular wards or the purchase of pieces of medical equipment. Additionally, some can be spent more generally, in line with the charity’s objectives. If a donor requests that a donation be designated to a particular department or use, it is our job to make sure that it goes to the correct source and for the purpose it was intended. We will discuss requests for the donations, and if for any reason this is not possible, we will contact the donor and look to agree on an alternative course of action.

Your impact
Our amazing supporters, who have raised vital money for the charity, have helped to fund projects that truly help make a difference to patients and our people.
Charitable funds have been used to purchase a new retinal scanning machine for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. This facilitates screening for eye health issues and minimises the risk of permanent eye damage or blindness for babies.
With thanks to charity donations, a dedicated room in the Emergency Department for relatives of patients who are receiving end of life care has been transformed from a once cold and unwelcoming room, into a tranquil and professional space. The space is fitted with elegant light boxes and artwork, created by local artists, and provides essential information for loved ones during a distressing time.
The charity has also funded vital equipment to help support families who would like a home birth. The equipment means that we can offer the best possible care, support and choice for families.
Thanks to the generous support given to our Breast Unit Fund, we have been able to fund research nurses for clinical trials, purchase specialist equipment, and provide a variety of health and wellbeing programmes, which help to support patients during their breast cancer treatment and recovery.
The charity also supported the opening of our Butterfly Hub. This is a home-from-home facility, which gives families a private space away from the ward environment as they face the death of a loved one. The Butterfly Hub is used by other services at the hospital, including the bereavement midwife, mortuary and chaplaincy teams.
Kind donations have enabled our Neurology Unit team to receive specialist training to enhance their knowledge regarding the diagnosis and treatment of patients affected by symptoms of stroke and stroke-like presentations.
Our people have also benefited from support given to the charity, with some funding going towards the opening of a new staff area to support our people’s health and wellbeing. The hub, called the ‘Alex Lounge’, is a bright, modern area for our people to relax and take some time out.
Donations to The Princess Alexandra Hospital Charity have also funded Christmas gifts for patients and meals to say thank you to our incredible volunteers.
