Frequently asked questions
- You can ask to speak to the nurse in charge during the day or night
- You can speak to the nurse looking after you during the shift
- You can speak to the nurse looking after you to contact the team about your concerns. In surgery we don’t always have doctors on the ward but we can alert them for any concerns or queries you have
- Your named nurse will assess your pain and check your drug chart for pain medications. She can also escalate to your team if you need more
- You can ask the team when they come for your daily review
- You can ask the nurse looking after you for your treatment plan
- You can speak to the nurse in charge and arrange for them to come in outside of visiting hours. However, please be aware that the team may not be readily available and you may have some time to wait. Relatives may need to wait in the quiet room outside of visiting hours.
- Any patient movement within the hospital is based on clinical need or following a risk assessment. For clarity, please speak to your named nurse for more information
- You have to write a request through the Medico Legal department. They will be able to tell you how long the process will take

- You can speak to the Medico Legal department for more information and directions. We can give you a yellow medical form for proof of admission
- You will have to be assessed for eligibility for hospital transport. Ask the nurse looking after you to check if you are eligible but we encourage everyone to use own transport or friends/relatives where possible due to demand on service
- Your named nurse will give you information on drain care as well as where to go if you have concerns
- You can ask your named nurse for your follow up schedule for drain review and removal
- District nurses can support if needed
- Your named nurse will give you information on catheter care, link to catheter supplies as well as where to go if you have concerns
- You will be provided a catheter passport that will reflect dates of insertion and the change schedule
- You will be referred to the district nurses for catheter changes
- The stoma nurse will make sure you are followed up in the community and have all your needed supplies
- You will not be sent home until you are competent with stoma care or care is in place
- Your named nurse will give you information on stoma care as well as where to go if you have concerns
- Your named nurse will give you information on wound care, extra dressings as well as where to go if you have concerns
- You will be referred to either the district or practice nurse for further wound management if needed
- Your named nurse will give you information and leaflets for help in the community
- Therapies can assess your safety and mobility on the ward as well as any equipment you may need at home
- Your named nurse can refer you to our Transfer of Care Team and a social worker can make a care assessment for you if you are eligible for this.
- After the team’s decision to discharge you, they will have to review other patients in surgery before they can complete your paperwork.
- The pharmacy caters to the entire hospital’s discharge medications so they may take a while.
- Your transfer to the Discharge Lounge is to facilitate patient flow, so other patients can be admitted. The Discharge Lounge provides the same services as the wards and they are equipped to make your discharge quicker and smoother.
- Your named nurse will inform your team about your decision and give you a waiver to sign indicating that you are aware of the risks.
- Inform your named nurse who can update your records to include this information
- The Housekeeping team will come around to take orders daily. Please inform them as well so you can be offered appropriate choices as there are special diet menus available
- If your requirement is complex then we can refer you to our dietician team for advice
- On admission, your named nurse will ask about your property and valuables, please declare what you have brought with you to hospital. We have a valuables cupboard for safekeeping. Your valuables will be labelled and kept there safely until your discharge
