The preferred way forward for the location of the new hospital is a greenfield site in East Harlow, approximately 3.5 miles from the existing Princess Alexandra Hospital site and adjacent to the new junction 7a of the M11.
The choice of location for the preferred way forward began in late 2016 when AECOM undertook assessment of potential options for relocation. They analysed a number of areas and sub-areas to the North and East of Harlow before advising on three areas that had the best potential as a site for a new hospital.
Between May 2018 and February 2019 a more detailed options analysis was undertaken. Taking into consideration our stakeholders, existing town plans and traffic planning a site was selected and work progressed.
In February 2019 The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust (PAHT) held an evaluation event with a wide range of local stakeholders. Following the HMT (Her Majesty’s Treasury) Green Book Process, a preferred way forward was agreed at the event
The preferred way forward was then formally approved by the PAHT board in March 2019.The preferred way forward is the option which best aligns with the strategic priorities of not only PAHT but the wider healthcare system and local area.
Discussions and negotiations on the site and location of the new hospital continue and details are being finalised. Until then, the discussions remain commercially sensitive.
Transport needs in the future
PAHT continue to work closely with local councils and highways agencies to ensure that the transport needs of local people are met. Further work on transport is being undertaken by appointed traffic and highways consultants Mott MacDonald.
