Stay well this winter

Stay Well This Winter

Winter can be seriously bad for our health, especially if you have a long term health condition or are aged 65 or older.

The cold weather can be particularly harmful if you are part of these groups - it can weaken your immune system, increase your blood pressure and can put you at a higher risk of strokes, heart attacks and chest infections. Luckily, there are a number of things you can do to keep you and your family well this winter:

  • At the first sign of a cough or cold, don't wait until it gets more serious! Get immediate advice from your pharmacist. The sooner you get advice the better - pharmacists are here to help you stay well this winter.
  • If you have prescribed medication make sure your order and pick up you prescription before the Christmas holidays start as many GPs and pharmacies will be closed over the holidays.
  • It is important to keep warm. Make sure your house is heated to at least 18°C (65°F).
  • Make sure you get your flu jab. It is free because you need it.

Remember, if you need help over the holiday period when your GP surgery or pharmacy is closed, call NHS 111 or visit www.nhs.uk.
