Fight flu this winter

Stay Well This Winter

Don't put off getting the flu vaccine - it's free because you need it

The flu vaccine is the best protection we have against this unpredictable virus. Each year we are facing different strains of flu as they change and evolve, this is why it is important that all those at risk are vaccinated every year. This includes people aged 65 and over, those with long term health conditions and pregnant women.

The free vaccine is available for pregnant women as this is the safest way to protect you and your baby. Catching the flu during pregnancy can cause serious complications, making you less able to fight off infections. If you have a long-term health conditions such as heart, kidney or liver disease, diabetes or have suffered a stroke, flu can quickly develop into something very serious and could land you in hospital.

Flu can be particularly horrible for little children and if they get it, they can quickly spread it around your whole family. Children get the same symptoms as adults including fever, chills, aching muscles, dry cough and a sore throat. Some children can develop complications of flu such as bronchitis and pneumonia and may need hospital treatment. That's why this year, children aged between two and eight years old can receive a free nasal spray vaccine.

So if you or a member of your family are eligible for the vaccine, get it now - it's free because you need it. Contact your GP, pharmacist or midwife to get your flu jab.
