Princess Alexandra Hospital's maternity unit chosen for TV star's documentary series
Harlow's Princess Alexandra Hospital will be taking pride of place in a heartening documentary starring Emma Willis and featuring its busy maternity unit. The first of the six-part series, from Firecracker Films, called Emma Willis: Delivering Babies will air on the W channel this Monday, 22 October, at 10pm.
Princess Alexandra Hospital Trust (PAHT) was delighted to have been chosen to host the series by production company Firecracker Films, due to its caring and friendly maternity department, rated outstanding by CQC inspectors since 2016.
The well-known presenter of The Voice UK became a familiar face at the hospital as she joined the maternity unit to train to become a maternity care assistant. Individuals in this position support midwives in various assistant roles, enabling them to give one to one care to women and families delivering their babies.
The mother-of-three worked the regular long day 13-hour shifts for three to four days a week alongside midwives and other staff at the unit over a period of 10 weeks.
Emma said: 'I've always wanted to deliver babies and to work in a hospital. My mum did it. She worked on a labour ward for 15 years and then she worked in a theatre. I've grown up around hospitals."
She added: 'I can't train as a midwife as I'd have to go to university so this was the next best thing.'
Emma learned and carried out all the functions of a maternity care assistant, including taking blood pressure, blood samples and new born baby checks as well as observing a number of births.
Andrea Philip, Associate Director of Operations for Families and Women's Health, said: "Emma really embraced the role, and just became part of the team very quickly. She did really well in the short time to adopt to this important supportive role. We deliver more than 4,000 babies a year and our families come from across Essex and Hertfordshire, so this was a great insight for Emma and will really show the audience the wonder and joy to the start of parenthood experienced here at PAHT. "
Chief Executive Lance McCarthy said: "This is a wonderful series, showing amongst many things, just how amazing, caring, dedicated and respectful all of our colleagues who work in the maternity department are. Thank you to everyone who welcomed Emma and the crews in with open arms. Our staff should be enormously proud of the work they do which was so abundantly clear in this documentary."
