Intensive Care Fundraising Appeal

As the Princess Alexandra Hospital ITU Ventilator appeal heads into its final three months, only a few more exciting opportunities exist for local people to help raise funds for this vital piece of equipment.

The aim of the 12 month campaign is to raise £47,500 to purchase a specialist piece of equipment called a High Frequency Oscillator Ventilator which helps severe lung disease to breathe easier following a serious accident or illness.

Already a number of whacky and wonderful events have taken place, all raising monies for the Intensive Care Fundraising Appeal. Events that are still to take place include:

• 'Race night' at Harlow Greyhound Stadium, Friday 10th September. Tickets £5, £10 & £20.

• 'Square Dancing Night' at PAH Social Club, Friday 17th September. Tickets £7-50.

• Charity Ball & Auction at Manor of Groves Hotel, Saturday 30th October. Tickets £60.

Sarah Jones, Sister on ITU and colleague, Claire McClements have been solely responsible for setting up the appeal. Both individuals have worked in the department for a number of years and seen what benefits the piece of equipment brings to those who use it.

Sarah said: “The ward does not have this type of ventilator, and instead hires it in which costs the unit £2,200 per week when someone needs it.

Last year we hired the equipment about 6 times, and each patient was on the machine for an average of 4-6 weeks. Therefore it makes sense for us to purchase our own one, hence why we have started this campaign. To date everyone has been very generous with their donations and we hope that people will continue to support these three remaining events.”
