Annual admissions to the unit are approximately 300 - 360 per year from the local area & North Essex.
Neonatal surgery, Nitric oxide therapy and ECMO (Extra corporeal membrane oxygenation) therapy are not provided on site.
Babies are transferred mainly to London and Cambridge Hospitals for these therapies, although sometimes babies are transferred to Leicester for ECMO.
Up to date equipment includes SLE 5000 high frequency oscillation ventilator, Draeger transport incubator.
Phillips multichannel monitoring is our choice. These monitors have facility to monitor transcutaneous pCo2 & pO2. Cardiac echo & cranial ultrasound is available.
There is a Community Neonatal Service provided by the Community Paediatric Nurse Team to facilitate early discharge of babies being fed by gastric tube and provides support for babies with chronic oxygen needs at home in the community.
