Locke ward is a general medical ward specialising in haematology and respiratory care.
At present we have two haematology consultants and one respiratory consultant who all carry out ward rounds twice a week.
All patients will be seen by a doctor from their team each working day (Monday - Friday). We have
in-patients as well as sharing part of the ward with the haematology day unit.
The ward also has a fast track policy for haematology patients.
On the respiratory side we mainly have inpatients but currently building a service for patients with some conditions to go home with chest drains and come back to the ward as a day case for thoracic washouts.
At present these are being carried out by medical staff but guidelines are being prepared to enable nursing staff to perform these procedures.
The majority of qualified nurses are assessed in administration of drugs via Groshong/ Hickman/ Picc lines and we also provide support and assistance to other wards.
Ward based spirometry by medical and some nursing staff.
