The pre-assessment service is the start of your inpatient journey through the Hospital. Following your outpatient appointment you will be invited for a pre-assessment visit before the day of your stay.
The objective of this visit is so that we can determine if you are fit for surgery and that the appropriate care and treatment is in place before, during and after your operation.
For patients having general, urological, orthopaedic or gynaecological surgery you will be seen by staff at Galen House.
Patients who require other surgery will be seen by staff in one of our three other pre-assessment locations (please check your appointment letter for details of where you need to attend).
During this appointment you will have the opportunity to ask any questions, gain an understanding of what you can expect during your visit and a thorough health check.
Having completed your pre-assessment you will be asked to attend same day admissions on the day of your surgery.
Specific Patient Information
The Trust has a duty to see and treat all patients within 18 weeks of the initial referral from the GP. To help us meet this target you need to be aware of the role you play.
We would discourage you from booking a holiday if you know your surgery is due. If you are already committed to a break then please inform us as soon as possible.
If you can not attend any appointments or the operation please let us know immediately.
To undergo surgery you need to be physically fit. There are occasions when we do not feel that patients are well enough to cope with the stresses of a surgical procedure.
In this instance we will refer you back to your GP with an explanatory letter of why we have not allowed you to proceed e.g. high blood pressure, MRSA positive or a scan shows a heart irregulatory.
Once you are fit enough the GP will refer you back to the unit for another assessment.
