Did You Know?

  • One out of every four people who go to A&E could have been treated elsewhere in the community for example by their GP, or could have self-treated.
  • Every time someone goes to A&E and is discharged without needing further treatment, the cost to the NHS is £124.
  • Remember A&E and 999 services are for life-threatening and emergency conditions only.

During the winter months NHS services can quickly become stretched, particularly over the Christmas period. At this time it is more important than ever that members of the public access the correct NHS service for their needs.

Illness caused by winter ailments, such as coughs and colds, flu, and the winter vomiting bug are unpleasant for people but can usually be managed by getting plenty of rest and following some basic medical advice. Local high-street pharmacists provide accessible, expert advice and treatment, without the need for an appointment.

If you become unwell or injured and are unsure which NHS service is right for you call NHS Direct on 0845 46 47.
