Colposcopy Service

Colposcopy

At the Princess Alexandra Hospital there is a dedicated Colposcopy Suite which is located in the Women’s Health Unit. It has a separate entrance and waiting area and the unit is a new purpose built modern facility.

Colposcopy is simple examination of the cervix using a highly magnified camera, which enables the practitioner to see any abnormalities.

This Colposcopy team comprises of two consultant gynaecologists, Miss K. El-Farra and Mr Al Samarrai . A Senior nurse colposcopist, Mrs Judy Dix and There is also medical, nursing and administrative support.

The Clinics are held every day of the week Monday though to Friday, where approximately 150 patients are seen at Colposcopy every month.

There is now opportunity for women to be seen and treated on their first visit to the clinic; this is to save patients attending on more than one occasion. To be eligible for this a number of factors have to be taken into account. For example previous smear results and clinical findings on the day.

The treatment offered within the clinics involves local anaesthetic being injected into the cervix and then a fine wire loop is used to remove the affected area.

The Colposcopy clinic offers a telephone service (01279 827106, 8:00– 4:00pm Monday to Friday) This is a direct telephone number to the Colposcopy Secretary and the Nurse Colposcopist for any questions and concerns that patients may have.

The staff are highly trained and experts in their field and recognise that having a colposcopy examination can be a worry however the staff will do their best to put you at your ease.
