Early Pregnancy Unit (EPU)

Early Pregnancy Unit (EPU)

The EPU department is led by Mr. D Elsandabesee. There is a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist in attendance and other obstetrician consultants also providing cover to the EPU, with two experienced nurses and clerical support.

The EPU unit aims to provide care and support for women up to 22 weeks gestation, who may be experiencing problems in their pregnancy.

This may include:

  • PV bleeding
  • Abdominal pain
  • Excessive vomiting in early pregnancy (Hyperemesis).

Ideally a health care provider may refer women to the EPU for example:

  • GP
  • Midwife
  • NHS Walk in centre
  • A&E

You can also refer yourself if you think you have one of the above problems, you will then be reviewed by the EPU team.

At present we do not operate an appointment service, therefore it is turn up and wait system much like A&E.

The EPU offers a telephone service (01279 827107, 8:00– 5:00pm Monday to Friday). We are open Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 17:00 (except bank holidays). However where possible, we do ask women who are referred/ attending EPU to be in the Unit no later than 16:30 hrs.

Outside these hours you will be advised to go to our Accident & Emergency Department (A&E) at the Princess Alexandra Hospital (PAH), where a doctor from the Obstetric and Gynaecology team will see you.
