East Herts Team

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

The East Herts team is a group of midwives in the Princess Alexandra Hospital Antenatal Clinic, supporting pregnant women across the East Hertfordshire region.

Once your GP has confirmed your pregnancy, and referred you for your care at the Maternity Unit at Princess Alexandra Hospital. Your ultrasound scans, booking appointment, consultant antenatal appointments (if necessary) will be in the Antenatal Clinic at the hospital.

Blood tests can be taken at The Princess Alexandra Hospital or Herts and Essex hospital (Bishop’s Stortford).

It is likely that most of the care you receive during your pregnancy will be from your East Herts Community midwives based at the QE 11 Hosptal in  Welwyn Garden City and your local GP within the community.

If you are a low risk pregnancy you have the option of having your baby in the Birthing Unit at the Princess Alexandra Hospital or at home (which you must discuss and organise through your East Herts Community Midwife) Alternatively you can have your baby on the Labour ward at Princess Alexandra Hospital.

Tours of the unit are held on Sundays at 14.30. Phone 01279 441607 to book a place on the tour. Please note that partners can attend but children are not allowed to attend due to the risk of spreading infection.

Parent Craft sessions (learning about caring for your baby) take place with the East Herts Community Midwives at your GP surgeries.

Your  East Herts Community Midwives will visit you at home the day after you are discharged from Princess Alexandra Hospital and will arrange your postnatal care with you to meet your individual needs.

All the Midwives and the Maternity Care Assistant are fully trained to help you with breast feeding through the hospitals commitment to ‘Baby Friendly Initiative’ (BFI).

Please contact us on 01279 827102 for further information.
